MY TURN IN THE NURSERY

Last Sunday was my turn in the nursery to work.

My heart wasn't in it; my feelings were hurt.

A child from its mother did not want to part

And it cried a lot with it's broken heart.

I prayed that soon the hour would end,

That I could relax- no more children to tend.

Soon the hour was over, it felt good to b e free.

I said, "once a month was too much for me!"

That very next Sunday as I sat in the pew

A very good sermon, but visitors were few.

But down came a woman and her soul was saved.

She was the mother of that crying babe!

Then it dawned on me that I had been a part

Of one being saved--giving God her heart.

From that day on I would never dread

Working in the nursery while souls are fed.

I've been working on revising the nursery list. What we currently have is not working very well. Please contact me if you would like to be added or removed from the current worship & Sunday school nursery list. It's very important to the mother's and father's of small children & infants to able to be free to worship whole hearted during that hour. Thanks so much in advance for your devoted commitment.

These kids sure were pumped up for Jesus on Sunday morning. Dancing, shouting and singing all the Glory to our Lord above. What a wonderful job they did. They worked hard and had fun at the same time learning the fun dances and songs they performed for you. Joy to God above!

What a wonderful week! We danced, sang, played games, enjoyed bible stories and discovered God's love for us all week long. A big thanks to Bethel UMC and the volunteering members of Fairfield UMC for another successful VBS. Where we were able to touch and change the lives of so many little ones.

Christ is alive, and goes before us to show and share what love can do. This is a day of new beginnings; our God is making all things new.

This is the hymn we sang on my first Sunday with you. Remember? This will be the hymn we sing together this coming Sunday as we share in one final service together. It will be a bitter sweet gathering for John and Me. We will feel sad leaving behind such a wonderful congregation that has truly loved and embraced us. But we will go out with joy knowing that Christ is leading you onward. And we celebrate your new pastor, Rev. Tony Matthews and for his joining you in ministry.

So, let's join together and celebrate this time of new beginnings.

Journeying To the Cross Through The Shack

Faith Discovery Stations for Kids...

Tuesday March 3 we will begin our journey to the cross with the children. All children are welcome to participate. The study will last 6 weeks ending on Tuesday April 7th, just before Easter! You children will not want to miss this...Every week in March we will have a supper prior to our meeting beginning at 5:30 pm, then the children will join us for singing at 6:30 pm and our faith discovery Stations will begin around 7 pm. There will be Lent Sermon for Adults during this time each Tuesday in March beginning at 7 pm. (More to come on that later...) There will be no supper provided at our last session on April 7th and the children are asked to arrive no later than 6 pm on this date only! - Our Tuesday Feb. 17th dinner this month will be Chicken Pie, peas, dessert and tea beginning at 5:30

-Rita mentioned helping the East Lincoln Pregnancy Counseling Ctr. by asking each Sunday School Class and each Church Group to donate money ($5 per person) to buy a ticket to their coffee/desserts banquet (Tues. March 5th 7pm - 9pm) The cost per ticket is $62.50, 8 to a table. So we would like to have at least 8 different groups purchase a ticket. Suggested maybe a drawing to see who went from each group!

-Meals for Revival’s in March. Cost: $3 per person or $10 a family

All Women in the Church are asked to help bring desserts & tea...
March 3rd- hotdogs w/ brownies for dessert

March 10th- Smoked Turkey, potato casserole, green beans/angel food cake with strawberries for dessert

March 17th- Soup & Cornbread/ banana pudding for dessert

March 24th- Pinto beans, hotdogs, slaw/ cobbler's for dessert

March 31st- Pizza & salad/ cookies

- We doubled our pledge to the UMW district!

- Ordering 1 pack of 10 Assorted Mission Cards to send out throughout the year.

- Made a mission offering from the UMW in honor of Mary Lee Howard.

-We finished our study of Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World and will begin next month with sharing things we personally struggle with in our faith...this will lead to open discussion…

Flood Buckets and Shoeboxes!

A Big Thank You to all who helped participate in missions and outreach the last couple of months. You completed 13 flood buckets to send to our sisters and brothers in need all over the country. They came at a much needed time. The youth have already taken them to the United Methodist Mission Resource Center to be shipped out. You also collected 7 shoeboxes for the United Methodist Mission, Project Agape. Those Christmas gifts will be shipped out this week and sent to our friends in Armenia!

General Conference Begins This Week

General Conference for The United Methodist Church begins this week. Over 1000 delegates from all over the world gather to decide the direction for our denomination. Issues of church legislature, polity, a new hymnal, evangelism, missions and social justice, as well as finances will all be discussed. Both laity and clergy are voting delegates. Please keep General Conference in your prayers. What happens on this large scale does ripple out to touch on all local churches. To learn more, go to www.umc.org and you can even catch "live streaming" of conference. It is very interesting!

Satan knows exactly how to tempt Jesus. The temptation story not only reveals the divinity of Jesus and his power to resist temptation, but it also invites us to ask the question, “what is a priority in my life?” Each day we must face temptations that seek to make their way to the top of our priority list. We choose work over a dinner around the table with family, we choose to blast an email to someone instead of facing them with our concern, or we choose a soccer game over worship on Sunday morning. Today, take a moment to examine your priorities in life. Where is your relationship with Christ in the midst of your list?

Prayer: O God, your glory is always to have mercy. Be gracious to all who have gone astray from your ways, and bring them again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace and hold fast the unchangeable truth of your Word, Jesus Christ your Son, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Ash Wednesday Worship

Join together this Wednesday, February 6, 7:00PM at Fairfield UMC for an Ash Wednesday Worship Service. This service allows us to enter into an act of repentance as we prepare to walk with Christ on the journey to the cross. Ash Wednesday worship traditionally allows us to wear a cross, made of ashes (from the ashes of last year's Palms from Palm Sunday) on our forehead as a sign of repentance. Jerod Brent Barker, son of Benny and Rhonda Barker, proposed to Diana Lee Cronland, daughter of Aaron and Susan Cronland, on January 23, 2008.

Diana said, "We have been great friends since the 7th grade and thankfully met up later in life to see we were still great friends and a lot more. He asked for permission from my Daddy the day before but had the ring for a month before that. I guess he had to muster up the courage ;) He waited until the very last hour of my 30th birthday to ask me for my hand. Just like a Barker ;)"

Today, the confirmation class learned about John Wesley, founder of our denomination. They learned that he had faith the size of a mustard seed and that faith launched a new movement. See if you know the answers to some of the Methodists fun facts they learned.

Thurs. Jan. 24...Susan just spent some time with Edd. He is doing better. They are giving him some antibiotics to fight an infection.

I have heard only raves from the audience about your performance. You guys amaze me every year with your talent and showmanship. I can think of no greater way to have you glorify God this Christmas Season! I had several people tell me that this program is what made their
Christmas. It made them think of the true meaning and really got them in the Christmas Spirit. Each of you are truly a blessing I cherish!

GOOD WORK! Thank you to all the children who worked so hard. Learning the songs was not an overnight task. I enjoyed our Sunday afternoon practices and looked forward to spending time with each of you. I also thank the parents who took the time to help out and get them to practice. Jennifer Barker for helping with the Music, Kadye McCaslin for running the music on performance night, Stephanie Barker for decorations, Erin Thompson for helping with the toddlers, Leslie McIntosh for introduction, all the men who helped with the stage, the Young Adult Sunday school class who helped to set up, Bill Dellinger for setting up the sound and mikes, everyone who made food, the women who stayed to clean, Ronny Rudd...shhhh..you know what for. And to everyone who came to support and listen to the great story the children had to share.

What's Our Vision?

When you think of the word "vision," what comes to mind? Perhaps it's how we see...perhaps it's what we see, but when we think about our church perhaps it should be an understanding of where we are going. Jesus taught about having a vision and his teachings are related to us through many of the parables found in the Bible. This begs the question, how do we define the vision of Fairfield United Methodist Church?

This question is one that many churches wrestle with in relation to their own church, but it is one for which the Fairfield Church Council is determined to find an answer. On December 1st, members of Fairfield and Bethel Church Councils met with Rev. Chris Westmoreland from Assurance UMC in Huntersville. The four and half hours were spent in worship, communion, discussion, and prayer. The councils looked at four overriding questions in an effort to help us realize the needs that are in our community and how we can best serve God through our efforts.

The first question: WHY DOES OUR COMMUNITY NEED JESUS?

The second, WHY DOES THIS COMMUNITY NEED THE CHURCH (meaning the body of Christ)?

The third, WHY DOES THIS COMMUNITY NEED OUR CHURCH?

And the fourth, WHOSE CHURCH ARE WE? (To whom does our church belong?)

Let's face it...the Denver community is changing--daily. The pace is faster, the traffic heavier, and the faces we meet on the road aren't people we know by name anymore. Rather than looking upon all the growth and change as negative, we must remember that this growth gives us an opportunity like none other--it gives us more people "to reach out and invite" just as our mission statement proclaims.

As the council moves forward with our "visioning," we will be reading the text, The Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations and will begin looking for ways to implement small tests of change in an effort to minister to God's people--all of God's people. Chris reminded us that Jesus is most concerned about the people who are not here yet and as we vision, we must keep in mind that through prayer and careful discernment, we can figure out what God is calling Fairfield to do. If what we do is His will, IT WILL BE SUCCESSFUL.

We challenge you to ponder the four questions and post any of your thoughts. During our sharing sessions we had many, many wonderful things to share about our church and what makes it special. What do you think makes Fairfield special? Then, think about this--How do others view our church?

Relay For Life Leader Needed...

Please prayerfully consider being the Relay For Life Leader for our church. Add this to your prayer list and we will see where God leads us. If anyone is interested please contact us under the contact us section, on the right. I don't want to put any pressure on anyone but we will need to come to a decision before December 7th. Which is their Kick-Off Open House. The leader will also need to have access to the computer/Internet. They meet once a month until the event in April. Please know that if you feel called to this position it is a wonderful cause that our church will stand behind you and your efforts 100%. This is not a one man team and we are here to lift you up and support you.

What is a blog and how does it work? Many of you may ask yourselves this. I know I did the first time I heard about blogging. It's a place on the Internet, much like a web page, where you can share and enrich communications.

You may ask how reading the things posted here will enrich communications? If used properly this BLOG is so much more than a place to come and find out what is going on at Fairfield United Methodist Church. Please take time to notice, that at the end of every post there is a comment section. You are allowed and encouraged to add your thoughts and feelings. After all each of us make up this wonderful church we unite our selves in. Before you know it everyone is checking in to see what has been posted and who has commented. It's addicting, I can tell you that first hand. When you have a cause as good as the one we serve being addicted to it is a great thing.

The word will spread fast, soon everyone is inviting friends and families to join in on topics, polls, to view our latest photo's or to listen to Rev. Susan's Sermons. Then this little church in Denver, North Carolina is serving much more than it's members. The word has spread and people from all over are being blessed by what we have to offer. You never know who we will touch or what great blessing can come from this. As we all know; our Lord is so much greater than the four walls of Fairfield UMC.

First and foremost I want to thank the good Lord above. Our missions and projects would never be a success without you at the core of everything we do. Second, all the church comers of Fairfield UMC. I am continuously amazed at your willingness to serve and reach out. It's the most wonderful feeling to be in a church with such a dedicated family of believers. Your service is a continuous symbol of your faith and love. Last but most defiantly not least, the community our church is grounded in. Your support is always a blessing...

Thank you men who cooked the best BBQ and chicken in town again, all night long.

Thank you all workers. Those who collected money and greeted our guest with the loving hospitality that you gave. Everyone who worked behind the scenes to prepare everything it took to make this mission a success. You will never be forgotten or unmentioned.

Hospitality Event Postponed...

You all responded with such great enthusiasm and I want to thank you for that.
Unfortunately, the district is postponing the event. They were hoping for some more participation from others. But looks like only Bethel and Fairfield (and a few others) were interested in hospitality! Good for you.
So, instead, rest this Sunday! We will host it again sometime soon!

A gift of joy and a message of God's love.

Dear Friend,
It's a heartbreaking reality. Millions of boys and girls around the globe live in difficult circumstances and are in desperate need of hope. Whether they are slum dwellers in Calcutta or orphans in Johannesburg, children long to know that they are loved.

Operation Christmas Child is one way you can make a difference in a young person's life. Since 1993, this Samaritan's Purse project has shared the Good News of God's love with hurting children through the simplest of gifts-shoe boxes! Filled with school supplies, toys, and personal items that are packed by caring people, these boxes help introduce children o Jesus Christ. Local believers follow up with evangelistic programs, and many precious boys and girls later receive Jesus as their Savior.

We invite your family, church, or group to take part in this unique missions project. As you pack a shoe box for a child, please pray for the boy or girl who will receive it. Spread the word so others will get involved too. You will be amazed to see how God can use a small gift-your gift-to touch a child's heart!

HOW TO PACK A SHOE BOX GIFT

1. SHOE BOX- Use an empty shoe box (standard size please) or a small plastic container. You can wrap the box (lid separately), but wrapping is not required.

-Pray for the child who will receive your special gift.

2. BOY OR GIRL? Determine whether your gift will be for a boy or a girl, and the child's age category; 2-4, 5-9 or 10-14. Use the appropriate boy/girl label. Download label from http://www.samaritanspurse.org/ or pick one up at the church.

3. FILL WITH GIFTS- Fill the box with a variety of gifts that will bring delight to a child.

4. INCLUDE YOUR DONATION- Please donate $7 or more for each shoe box you prepare to help cover shipping and other project costs. You can use a donation envelope or you can give online through our EZ give method. If you or your family are preparing more than one shoe box, please make one combined donation.

-It's easy and convenient to give online. Go to www.samaritanspurse.org, and look for our EZ Give button.

5. DROP OFF- Place a rubber band around each closed shoe box and drop off at Fairfield UMC by Sunday, November 11, 2007.

GIFT IDEAS:
School Supplies- pens, pencils and sharpener, crayons or markers, stamps and ink pad sets, writing pads or paper, solar calculators, coloring and picture books, etc.
Toys- small cars, balls, dolls, stuffed animals, kazoos, harmonicas, yo-yo's, jump ropes, small Etch A Sketch, toys that light up or make noise (with extra batteries), Slinky, etc.
Hygiene Items- toothbrush, toothpaste, mild bar soap (in a plastic bag), comb, washcloth, etc.
Other- Hard candy and lollipops (please double bag all candy), mints, gum, T-shirts, socks, ball caps, sunglasses, hair clips, toy jewelry, watches, flashlights (with extra batteries)
A Personal Note- In a separate envelope, you may enclose a note to the child and a photo of yourself or your family. (If you include your name and address, the child may write back.)

DO NOT INCLUDE: Used or damaged items; war-related items such as toy guns, knives or military figures; chocolate or food; out of date candy; liquids or lotions; medications or vitamins; breakable items such as snow globes or glass containers; aerosol cans.

Thank you so much to all who came and enjoyed the events at our Fall Festival. We so a lot of new faces and that was really nice. We enjoyed having each of you. Thank you also to the church members who decorated a trunk, prepared food and joined us for all the fun.
